Hobart Hurricanes Through To The BBL 24-25 Finals
In an electric clash at Bellerive Oval, Hobart, the Hobart Hurricanes defeated the Sydney Sixers by 12 runs on Thursday in the Big Bash League 2024-25 Qualifier. The match was played under lights on a cool evening, with both teams competing for a spot in the finals.
Set total of 173 for 7 is a fighting score in their 20 overs. Mitchell Owen and Caleb Jewell provided a partnership of 47 runs to begin the innings, but Owen was dismissed by Jafer Chohan. Matthew Wade came in at number three, and he managed to score just 4 runs before he was dismissed by Mitchell Perry. However, Jewell set himself and stayed very good in his innings as he was scoring 40 off 41 balls and had set the pitch for a brilliant finish.
Ben McDermott and Tim David put the foot down and pushed the opposition with a flurry of runs. McDermott scored 42 in 31 balls, while David smashed a speedy 25 off only 10 deliveries, and in doing that pushed the Hurricanes past 150. Nikhil Chaudhary and Chris Jordan finished it off, with Jordan remaining not out. Although the Sixers bowlers, especially Jack Edwards and Ben Dwarshuis, tried to stem the flow of runs, it was the middle and lower order of the Hobart Hurricanes that made absolutely sure it was a defendable score.

Chasing 174, the Sixers were immediately in trouble well into their fourth over, having lost three early wickets including Josh Philippe for a duck and Jack Edwards out for a duck with both out to Riley Meredith and Cameron Gannon respectively. Kurtis Patterson was trying hard to consolidate the innings, scoring a brisk 48 with 33 balls, but he was dismissed in the 11th over, leaving the Sixers still needing a big performance from somewhere. That performance was almost there through Jordan Silk, who scored a commendable 57 off 44 balls. Still, no matter how well he tried to up the run rate, it just kept climbing.
Shaw played a gritty knock, remaining not out with 33 off 25 balls, showing some late resistance alongside Ben Dwarshuis, who also contributed with an unbeaten 16. It was too steep a task, though, as they fell short by 12 runs.
For the Hobart Hurricanes, Riley Meredith was the standout bowler, taking 2 wickets for 34 runs, while Cameron Gannon was economical, with figures of 2 for 10 in his 3 overs. Nathan Ellis and Chris Jordan lent their full support to the attack, keeping the pressure on throughout the Sixers’ innings.
With this all, Hobart Hurricanes moved one step closer to being crowned champions, while the Sydney Sixers need to come together and pull themselves together for their next match if they are looking to redeem themselves for the title.
