Jasprit Bumrah had a great year’s run as the bowler. He picked up 15 wickets and delivered match-winning spells that enabled India to win the T20 World Cup after 17 years, and he was named the Player of the Tournament.
He was the leading wicket-taker in Tests in 2024 with 71 wickets from 13 games. Only Kapil Dev has picked up more wickets for India in red-ball cricket during a single calendar year.
Now, this is the third time that Jasprit Bumrah has received the prestigious Polly Umrigar Award, having received it twice in the 2018-19 and 2021-22 seasons.
The only other player to win the award multiple times-five-is Virat Kohli, followed by Sachin Tendulkar and Ravichandran Ashwin, who have won it twice. In the 2022-23 season, Shubman Gill was awarded the prize.
Meanwhile, Smriti Mandhana picked up her third Best International Cricketer of the Year (women) award in addition to her two awards from the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons.
Mandhana was outstanding, especially in ODIs where she scored 747 runs at an average of 57.46. She scored four ODI centuries in the calendar year, a new high in the women’s game.
In addition, she was awarded ICC’s Women’s ODI Cricketer of the Year award earlier.
Sarfaraz Khan was crowned Best International Cricketer of the Year (men) in his debut, and Asha Sobhana did the same for the women.
Indian cricketing great Sachin Tendulkar has been accorded the Col. CK Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award. The Master Blaster still holds the records for the most runs scored in Test cricket and ODIs.
