Commencing at 7:30 PM local time, UP Warriorz Women won the match by 33 runs in a nail-biting contest in which the two sides exhibited fantastic performances. UP Warriorz Women, having won the toss, batted first and posted 177 for 9 in the 20 overs.
Vrinda Dinesh’s innings fell apart during the first ball when she could manage to score just 4 before being put into a familiar position after being caught at the insistence of Marizanne Kapp. Kiran Navgire smashed a spirited 17-ball 20 with three boundaries before she was showed off by a brilliant catch by Arundhati Reddy. An additional 13 runs were added by captain Deepti Sharma, but McGrath remained contained with a steady knock of 24 runs. Shweta Sehrawat added verve with a quickfire 11 runs off 6 balls, including a six, while Grace Harris struggled with a mere 2 runs.
Chris Henry scored 62 not out off 23 balls with three fours and six sixes, boasting a strike rate of 269.57, was considered the real fireworks. While Sophie Ecclestone chipped in with 12, and Saima Thakor remained not out on 4, the Warriorz put up a decent score amidst the loss of 9 wickets. The pick of the Delhi bowlers were Arundhati Reddy, who took 2 wickets, and Jess Jonassen, with 4, while Kapp’s economical spell helped her grab 2 wickets for 18.
The chase of 178 began cautiously for the Delhi Capitals. Shafali Verma anchored the innings with a cooler knock of 24 off 30, which was made up with four boundaries before she became the first scalp of debutant Kranti Goud. Goud struck again as she dismissed the captain Meg Lanning with just 5.
Jemimah Rodrigues stepped into action, scoring a blistering 56 off 35 balls with five fours and a six to ignite the hopes for a successful chase. Marizanne Kapp’s quick 9 and Annabel Sutherland’s 5 kept the scoreboard ticking, but wickets fell at regular intervals. Jess Jonassen and Sarah Bryce made only 5 runs each while Niki Prasad scored 18 off 10 runs to give them a little late momentum. However, the lower middle-order crumbled, which left Shikha Pandey stranded on 15 as Grace Harris and Kranti Goud ripped through the tail.
Harris ended with figures of 4 for 15, including the last three wickets in the 19th over, while Goud’s 4 for 25 earned her true recognition. Deepti Sharma’s spin finally took out Bryce who was calmly stumped by Uma Chetry, and Delhi was in trouble as they folded for 144 in 19.3.
The match demonstrated very different destinies: While Warrior was comprehensively better at batting with the help of a fieu of Henry, Delhi was lofted on Rodrigues’s shoulder. The Warriorz bowlers, inspired by Goud and Harris, put pressure eclecting into restraints during the whole match, especially on Delhi’s inability to build partnerships during the powerplay, in which they managed only 37 runs before losing crucial wickets. Among the few bright spots for Delhi was an all-round effort from Jonassen and a speedy half century from Rodrigues. The 33-run win for UP Warriorz gave ample reason for the side to feel cerebral and that they held their nerves, making the night a memorable one at Chinnaswamy bathed in glory.
