Harmanpreet Sciver-Brunt Helped MI Women to Win
In an exhilarating conclusion to the Women’s Premier League 2025 at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai, the Mumbai Indians Women claimed their third title in the history of the tournament by narrowly defeating the Delhi Capitals Women by just 8 runs. The match was played on March 15, 2025 and started at 8 PM IST. An exhilarating match with lots of ups and downs saw outstanding displays from both teams with the Mumbai Indians ultimately managing to shine in the thrilling finish
. After winning the toss, the Mumbai Indians Women chose to bat and set up a balanced total of 149 for 7 in their stipulated 20 overs. Things got off to a wobbly start as opening batter Hayley Matthews from Mia fell after having scored just 3 runs, bowled by Delhi’s Luis star Marizanne Kapp in the 3rd over. Yastika Bhatia soon followed, scoring 8 off 14 deliveries before edging one to Jemimah Rodrigues off Kapp’s bowling. Mumbai were in early trouble at 14 for 2 but Nat Sciver-Brunt and captain Harmanpreet dug in to restore some order.
Sciver-Brunt played a composed knock of 30 off 28 balls, with four boundaries, before being caught by Minnu Mani off debutant Nallapureddy Charani. Nevertheless, it was Harmanpreet who was the queen of the innings by smashing 66 off 44 deliveries with four boundaries and two towering sixes, anchoring the innings at a strike rate of 150.
Every time a wicket fell around her, her aggressive technique kept the scorecard ticking. Next to fall was Amelia Kerr (2), closely followed by Sajeevan Sajana (0), caught by an arm-ball from Jonassen, leaving Mumbai at 112 for 5. Losing Harmanpreet Singh in the 17th over, caught Kapp off Annabel Sutherland, did put a dent but G Kamalini (10 off 7), and Amanjot Kaur (14 not out off 7) added some useful runs in the end to get Mumbai to a presentable 149.
Sanskriti Gupta, already not out at 8, added valuable runs in the last overs. The Delhi bowlers shared the wickets, with Kapp (2 for 11) and Jonassen (2 for 26) spearheading the attack, and Charani giving good support with 2 for 43.
Delhi Capitals Women, chasing 150, out the blocks with intent but their innings started to stutter much like Mumbai’s. Skipper Meg Lanning smashed 13 off 9 balls, with two fours before Nat Sciver-Brunt struck in the second over with a beauty to bowl her out. Liz Truss’s counterpart, Shafali Verma’s 4 off 9 ended in a trapped lbw by Shabnim Ismail and Delhi was 17 for 2.
With some elbow grease, Jess Jonassen (13 off 15) and Jemimah Rodrigues (30 off 21) set about the rebuilding; but they lost Jonassen to Amelia Kerr, caught by Yastika Bhatia. Brief was the stay of Annabel Sutherland as she ended up out stumped off off Saika Ishaque and when Rodrigues was dismissed caught and bowled by Kerr, Delhi were reeling at 66 for 5.
Marizanne Kapp then took over determining the game, playing a belligerent 40 off 26 balls with five fours and a six keeping the hopes high for a comeback. Her partnership with Sarah Bryce (5) helped to stabilize the ship but losing Bryce in a run-out in the 13th over shifted all momentum back to Mumbai. Finally, Kapp was dismissed in a catch off Sciver-Brunt in the 18th over, and Shikha Pandey followed up with a golden duck, giving Delhi an impossible task of 27 in the last two overs.
Niki Prasad (25 not out, 23 balls) and Minnu Mani (4) tried their level best. Mani hit a four before falling to Hayley Matthews. Prasad was supported by Nallapureddy Charani (3 not out), but in vain-they finished with 141 for 9, 8 runs short. Mumbai’s bowlers delivered when it mattered.
Nat Sciver-Brunt was exceptional with 3 for 30. Amelia Kerr’s 2 for 25 and Hayley Matthews’ 1 for 37 pushed the pressure. Shabnim Ismail (1 for 15) and Saika Ishaque (1 for 33) chipped in with important wickets to make sure Mumbai really stood strong in defense. The score at the end of the powerplay was 37 for Delhi, and 20 for Mumbai-set indicating a close contest. The knockout innings from Harmanpreet Kaur earned her Player of the Match titles, well-deserved notice to her skills and captaincy.
Two titles won by Mumbai Indians Women in WPL display their overall dominance in the event’s brief history. For Delhi Capitals Women, it was so near yet so far. Kapp’s heroics weren’t good enough to bring down the spirited Mumbai side. A staple T20 cracker was viewed live by one of the very little occasions this time at Brabourne, with a distinction of what possibly shouldn’t have been this close to find again observed at WPL with a layer of excitement in women cricket.
