India Vs England Match Report
A nail-biting second T20I at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on January 25, 2025, had India pull off a thrilling two-wicket win over England to go 2-0 in the series. The match was highlighted by an exceptional performance from young Indian batsman Tilak Varma, whose knock ultimately turned the tide in India’s favor.
England batted first and posted a challenging total of 165 for 9 in their 20 overs. The innings was launched out of a strong start from Phil Salt, who mustered 4 runs off 3 balls. However, losing him early in the first over proved a hammer blow. The England captain Jos Buttler tried to steer them along with a well-conceived 45 off 30 balls, but otherwise, England saw their innings lose momentum after his dismissal. Contributions came further down with Jamie Smith (22 off 12) and Brydon Carse (31 off 17), who revived some scoring at the end, but Indian bowlers, chiefly Axar Patel and Varun Chakravarthy, kept England’s score in check with tight bowling and timely wickets.
The chase for India was itself not too smooth. The loss of openers Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma early put pressure on the middle order. However, Tilak Varma’s innings was what turned the match. He remained unbeaten on 72 runs from 55 balls, showing maturity beyond his years. With four boundaries and five sixes, he provided a beautiful blend of aggression and calmness. Along with Suryakumar Yadav (12 off 7) and later also the lower order, he paved the way through the chase with the partnerships.
The English bowlers, Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse being in the lead, succeeded to break through at regular intervals, which kept the contest in balance. Jofra was pretty effective in the meantime, securing a couple of early wickets. But Varma kept his cool, and with some support from the tail, particularly 9 off 5 from Ravi Bishnoi, India snatched the victory with four balls remaining.
Were there any tense moments in the game? Indeed, India had their blouse ripped when they were 146 for 8, but Varma stepped up to the challenge. His capability to find those boundaries at the right time when coupled with his partnership with Bishnoi for the last wicket added up to the nail-biting finish of the match.

This victory becomes another tribute to the power of Indian cricket in the series and the skill of the players they have on their side. Varma’s patience and composure will be another talking point, seeing that that might be the dawn of T20 cricket’s new era in Indian cricket. England, notwithstanding their loss, do have the fire in them, but some regrouping and strategizing must be on their minds if they are to counter the batsmanship of India through the remaining matches of the series.
