Marcus Stoinis Retired From ODIs

The World Cup-winning team member Marcus Stoinis made a big surprise with his decision to retire from one-day international cricket with immediate effect, but he will be available to represent the nation in the T20I format.

Stoinis was in Australia’s preliminary 15-man squad for the ICC Champions Trophy ODI tournament that will take place in Pakistan and the UAE later this month, but he will be replaced with the final squad announced by February 12.

The 35-year-old allrounder has been playing for the Super Giants in the ongoing South Africa T20 franchise competition where, according to reports, he has suffered a reasonably mild hamstring injury whilst bowling in recent days.

However, he has announced his decision to end his ODI playing days due to a desire to devote the latter stages of his career to T20 format-playing for Australia and franchise level.

“Playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for every moment I had in the green and gold,” Stoinis said today.

“It is something I always will treasure when I represent my country at the highest level.

“This wasn’t an easy decision, but I feel that it’s the right time for me to step away from ODIs and purely focus on the next chapter of my career.

“I have a great working relationship with Ron (Australia men’s team coach Andrew McDonald), and I really appreciate his support.

“I will be cheering the boys on in Pakistan.”

McDonald, currently in Galle for another Test match as part of the Australia Test cricket team, paid tribute to a great allrounder who has played 74 ODIs over nearly a decade.

Stoinis was named One Day Player of the Year at the 2019 Australian Cricket Awards.

“Stoinis has been such a pivotal part of our ODI setup for the last decade,” McDonald spoke earlier on.

“Not only has he been an invaluable contributor as a player but an amazing person to have in the squad.

“He is a complete leader, hugely popular, and a great person.

“He deserves to be congratulated for his ODI career and all of his achievements.”

About 18 months after his ODI debut at Headingley, Stoinis hit his name into the record books when he came up with an145-run heroics and struck an unbeaten 146 from 117 balls to almost get Australia home against New Zealand at Eden Park.

He even took 3-49 from his 10 overs in that match in January 2017, his second in Australia colours, and was named Man of the Match in Australia’s narrow 6-run loss.

His performance announced the arrival of the Western Australian as a potent force in white-ball cricket, finishing with 1495 runs at a strike rate of 93.96 in the 50-over format.

He also claimed 48 wickets at an average of 43.12 across his 74 outings, and was part of Australia’s ODI World Cup squads in England in 2019 and during their successful campaign in India four years later.
