MI Cape Town vs Joburg Super Kings Match Report
The 13th game of the SA20 2025 series saw MI Cape Town defeat the Joburg Super Kings by seven wickets in a quick affair at Newlands, Cape Town. With MI Cape Town chasing down the mark in only 15.5 overs, the match, which was played under Cape Town’s bright evening sky, featured some outstanding bat and ball game.
In their 20 overs, the Johannesburg Super Kings, batting first, scored a respectable 172 for 5. A strong opening partnership between Faf du Plessis and Devon Conway, who combined for 97 runs for the first wicket, was the high point of the innings. With six boundaries and three sixes in a quick 61 off just 38 balls, Du Plessis was the Super Kings’ standout batsman. But a turning point came when Corbin Bosch dismissed him in the eleventh over. Shortly after, Conway was stumped by Reeza Hendricks for 35. Despite some late impetus from Jonny Bairstow’s explosive 43 off 27 balls, the middle order found it difficult to maintain the momentum.
George Linde, who was economical and took a wicket for 39 runs in his four overs, was the bowling leader for MI Cape Town. Reeza Hendricks, who claimed two vital wickets for only seven runs in his two overs, made a substantial contribution with the ball as well. Rashid Khan and Corbin Bosch provided assistance, controlling the scoring pace and capturing wickets at critical times.

Ryan Rickelton responded with a brilliant display, hammering his way to 89 off only 39 balls, including eight sixes and four boundaries, which accelerated MI Cape Town’s chase. The pace of the chase was set by his partnership with Rassie van der Dussen, who scored 39 off 24. Together, they added 70 runs for the first wicket in 6.4 overs. Hendricks joined Rickelton to carry on the attack when Van der Dussen was exhausted, making sure the necessary run rate was kept under control.
Hendricks led MI Cape Town over the finish line with an undefeated score of 34 from 28 balls. The Johannesburg Super Kings bowled well during the innings; Matheesha Pathirana took Rickelton’s wicket and finished with statistics of 1/34. However, Rickelton’s assault had already caused the damage.
With MI Cape Town’s bowlers limiting the opposition after a solid start and their batsmen making the chase easy, this game not only demonstrated individual skill but also strategic gameplay. While the Johannesburg Super Kings will have to rebound for their next match, MI Cape Town’s triumph moved them up in the tournament standings. The game demonstrated the fierce rivalry and excellent cricket that the SA20 league has been known for.
