Chasing a target of 173, Paarl Royals fell behind the required run rate early in the innings. With Joe Root and Lhuan-dre Pretorius giving a strong start by making 26 each, their promising innings lost momentum with Mitchell Van Buuren and David Miller falling early for ducks. Though Sam Hain tried hard to hold it together for his side, Rashid Khan dismissed him for 20. Mujeeb Ur Rahman hit a late cameo of 34 off 21 balls, but his innings fell too far short to influence a win as Paarl Royals finished their innings at 139 for 9.
MI Cape Town’s pace attack turned the game around. Kagiso Rabada was almost unplayable: 2 for 22. The spin of George Linde was very much central in three for 15. Rashid Khan contributed greatly, in the capacity of a bowler and also with his setting of the field, stifling the Royals throughout their innings.
It is a classic example of how perpetual teams can dominate the T20 formats where MI Cape Town completed a further job of balancing batting and bowling compared to Paarl Royals, who, despite embodying a sublime start, could not summon enough intensity in the middle. MI Cape Town therefore restored their standing in the SA20 league, sending a signal to other teams about their versatility in aspects of the game.
