Mujeeb Ur Rahman Joins Mumbai Indians
The Mumbai Indians suffered yet another injury blow ahead of IPL 2025, acquiring Afghanistan’s young off-spinner, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, as the replacement for Allah Ghazanfar. It is a tactical move to add depth to their spinning department in the unfortunate circumstance of Ghazanfar being out of action with an injury.
Ghazanfar was to make a significant impression after being bought for a staggering sum of ₹4.8 crores in the IPL 2025 mega auction, but the L4 vertebra fracture that he sustained on Afghanistan’s recent tour of Zimbabwe will keep him out of action for at least the next four months, practically ruling him out of IPL 2025 and the Champions Trophy. This is a big loss not just for the Mumbai Indians, but also for the Afghanistan national team, where he is definitely their brightest talent in the limited-overs format.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman, young as he is, comes to the Mumbai Indians with a wealth of experience at 23. Regarded as one of the T20 global travelers, he brings his skill of deception through carrom balls and the dexterity of off-breaks mixed with leg-spin. Over the years, he has played 256 T20 games, collecting 275 wickets at an average of 23.67, and an economy rate of 6.75. He last played in the IPL for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2021, where he collected 19 wickets in 19 games. Injury stopped him from playing last season, resulting in Ghazanfar getting introduced into the squad.
Mujeeb is signing for a number of factors, including not only his talent but also his experience of Indian cricketers. Mujeeb has played a lot of T20 matches around the globe; he knows what adaptation to various conditions is all about. With that experience, he would serve as a perfect stand-in for the Mumbai Indians, following their tradition of exciting and strategic bowling skill in spinners.
The use of Mujeeb as a replacement for others like Adil Rashid, who are much more well-known, or domestic spinners like Tanush Kotian and Shams Mulani, points forth Mumbai’s intent to go for an international talent with a better name. This was confirmed through an official post on Mumbai Indian’s social media, with an aim to keep the team competitive even after setbacks.
For Mujeeb, it is a chance to make a mark globally by performing for Mumbai Indians, in one of the most competitive cricketing leagues, especially under the guidance of seasoned players and coaches. His inclusion will add to the uncertainty and mystery in Mumbai’s attack that can prove so crucial in the close matches that IPL has had to offer.
With the IPL 2025 season looming, Mujeeb Ur Rahman’s adaptation to the Mumbai Indians’ style of play will be the center of attention. Whether he can fill Ghazanfar’s shoes due to his injury will definitively determine Mujeeb’s performance for the Mumbai Indians’ chances of securing another IPL title.
