March 10, 2025, marked yet another exciting match of the Women’s Premier League hosted at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. In a nail-biting finish, Mumbai Indians Women got the better of Gujarat Giants Women by just 9 runs. Batting first after winning the toss, Mumbai Indians Women posted 179 runs for 6 in their 20 overs. The innings began briskly, but in the 3rd over, Amelia Kerr was dismissed for a 5-run cameo and left Mumbai in some early trouble at 17 for 1. Hayley Matthews played a steady knock of 27 off 22 balls with 3 fours and a six before being dismissed by Priya Mishra.

Nat Sciver-Brunt built momentum with a nice 38 off 31 (6 fours), but it was the captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, who stole the show with her smashing unbeaten 54 off 33 balls, hitting 3 fours and 3 sixes. Quick cameos were played by Amanjot Kaur (27 off 15), Sajeevan Sajana (11 not out), and some late run-outs of Yastika Bhatia (13).

Ashleigh Gardner with the ball from her four over bowling took 27 and Tanuja Kanwar for 41 runs was the limited bowlers from grabbing more runs from batting innings, plus Deandra Dottin leaked 44 runs in her four overs. Chasing 180, the Gujarat Giants took off with caution. Captain Beth Mooney off to a false start with 7 runs off 9 balls was dismissed by Hayley Matthews in the 3.1st over.

With poor performance involving 10 runs off 14 balls, Kashvee Gautam followed suit, and the responsibility fell on Harleen Deol (24 off 17) and Phoebe Litchfield (22 off 16) to steady the ship. However, things turned in favour of Mumbai after Shabnim Ismail double-struck out Gardner for a duck and Litchfield. The chase could not ignite after Deandra Dottin scored 10 runs off 11 balls, leaving Gujarat reeling at 92 for 6 in the 13th over.

But then Bharti Fulmali exploded batting 25 balls for 61, with eight fours and four sixes that rekindled the hopes of Gujarat: it took her knock, alongside Simran Shaikh, 18 off 16, 12 runs to get into the last over. But in the end, Mumbai held their nerve, with Hayley Matthews (3 for 38) and Amelia Kerr (3 for 34) getting the crucial blows in, dismissing Fulmali and Shaikh.

Then, the run-out of Tanuja Kanwar, and the stumping of Priya Mishra put the finishing touches on disposing of Gujarat at 170 all out. It was an all-round effort of the Mumbai bowling force. Shabnim Ismail took 2 for 17 in 4 overs brightened the beginning: Matthews and Kerr completely expelled Middle-order Gujarat.

Sciver Brunt (0 for 28) and debutant Sanskriti Gupta (1 for 18) stood no less firm in the supporting roles of Gujarat which prevented its success late on. Gujarat scored 40 runs in the powerplay, matching the 44 posted by Mumbai, but failing to rotate the strike during the middle overs was quite a big price to pay. Harmanpreet Kaur’s strong captaincy and inserted batting earned her the player of the match honors, while Fulmali’s valiant effort kept Gujarat in contention till the very end.

Mumbai Indians Women made sure of their triumph to hold their place on the table points, while consistency is still the need for Gujarat Giants Women, though with glimpses of brilliance. The Brabourne Stadium saw a traditional T20 contest where Mumbai’s 179 was just good enough to let them cross the line with a faint nine-run gap against Gujarat’s 170, beating a last-match act.
