Ben Sears, Will O’Rourke Roped In New Zealand Squad For Champions Trophy
New Zealand has announced a revamped squad for the forthcoming Champions Trophy 2025, featuring a blend of emerging talent and seasoned athletes. The selection includes fast bowlers Ben Sears and Will O’Rourke, along with all-rounder Nathan Smith, aimed at strengthening their roster for this esteemed tournament. Sears, who is 26 years old, has not played ODIs yet but has previously represented New Zealand in other formats. His re-entry into the team follows a significant recovery period from a knee injury that sidelined him for much of the last year.
Both O’Rourke and Smith come with limited experience in the 50-over format at the international level, but New Zealand will depend on the skill of veteran pacers Matt Henry and Lockie Ferguson to spearhead their bowling attack. Additionally, the team has enhanced its spin options by including all-rounder Michael Bracewell, who joins regular spinners Glenn Phillips, Rachin Ravindra, and Mitchell Santner. Notably, Santner will be making his debut as captain of the Black Caps in his first ICC tournament.

Despite some areas lacking extensive experience, New Zealand’s batting order remains strong, featuring established players like Kane Williamson, Tom Latham, and Devon Conway. However, both Williamson and Conway have demanding schedules due to commitments to the SA20, which could impact their participation in a preparatory tri-series in Pakistan ahead of the Champions Trophy. Lockie Ferguson will also be absent from this tri-series because of his participation in the ILT20, which continues until February 10. Pacer Jacob Duffy has been named as a reserve.
Head coach Gary Stead addressed the team’s selection, recognizing the difficulty in choosing from a deep pool of talent. “In the end, we opted for the squad that provides us with the best chances to perform effectively in the anticipated conditions in Pakistan and the UAE,” he stated.
New Zealand is placed in a group with Pakistan, India, and Bangladesh, and will kick off the tournament against Pakistan in Karachi on February 19.
