Pretoria Capitals vs MI Cape Town Match Report

The 27th match of the SA20 2025 series saw MI Cape Town in confrontation against Pretoria Capitals at SuperSport Park, Centurion, with a start time of 5:30 PM local time. MI Cape Town beat Pretoria Capitals by 27 runs in a high-scoring thriller.

Having batted first, MI Cape Town reached a challenging 222 runs with the loss of only three wickets. Rassie van der Dussen and Ryan Rickelton made great contributions, scoring 30 and 22 runs respectively, which set the stage for the innings. Particularly notables for MI Cape Town toward racking up the scores were the unbeaten knocks by Reeza Hendricks and Dewald Brevis. Hendricks was the anchor, playing through for a calm 77 runs off 44 balls, while the other attacking threat was Brevis, who scored 73 runs off only 32 balls, including six sixes. The run partnership almost single-handedly took MI Cape Town to this daunting total, with Colin Ingram also being run out for a quick 16.

Pretoria Capitals could be said to have been led by Migael Pretorius with the ball; he was expensive in giving away 69 runs off four overs. Will Jacks and Tom Rogers kept things reasonably tight in the beginning, but so did the spin of Senuran Muthusamy and pace of Gideon Peters in check.

Though Pretoria Capitals began their chase in an aggressive manner, early wickets kept them under pressure. Will Jacks scored a quick 39 off 22 balls before his dismissal during the ninth over slowed down the teams’ momentum. Steve Stolk managed only 13, and despite Will Smeed’s fighting 52 off 36, the middle order could not keep up with the run rate asked of them. Captain Kyle Verreynne could do little right, scoring 1 before being removed by Rashid Khan, MI Cape Town’s leading bowler with 2 for 25. Marques Ackerman and Ashton Turner also missed out after starts, Turner’s 22 off 8 not quite able to be considered the highlight.

Keagan Lion Cachet played a late cameo, staying not out on 34 from 18 balls, trying to keep Pretoria Capitals in the innings, but it all seemed a bit too far at the very end. The innings closed at 195 for Pretoria Capitals with a 27-run margin to make up.

The bowling for MI Cape Town was well controlled. Trent Boult and Matthew Potts got a couple of early breakthroughs before Azmatullah Omarzai, Corbin Bosch, and Rashid Khan piled on the pressure throughout the middle and death overs. Corbin Bosch was particularly effective, with 2 for 40, including the key wicket of Will Jacks.

With power hitting and strategic bowling at display, MI Cape Town’s batting depth and tactical bowling proved much for the Pretoria Capitals, taking them down with a resounding victory. This game was not just about individual shine; it was simply a testament to how the teams pulled through the pressure of a high-scoring encounter, MI Cape Town finally emerging on top.
