Rajat Patidar Announced As The Captain Of RCB

On February 13, 2025, the Royal Challengers Bangalore announced man Rajat Patidar as the new captain, marking a new era for the team and a momentous shift that has occurred in light of the release of previous captain Faf du Plessis before the mega auction.

At merely 31, Patidar was a consistent performer for RCB after his initiation into the team. Joining in 2021, he faced a turbulent road. After an IPL debut that saw him score only 71 runs from four games, Patidar was released. However, he pulled through to join RCB from the next season, showing his abilities silent yet clear, leading to his being retained for 2025 for INR 11 crore.

It is not as if he ascended into the captaincy as a random choice; he had been performing notably in domestic cricket. Patidar captained Madhya Pradesh in both the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and the Vijay Hazare Trophy, and he showed his captaincy mettle and tactical mind. To further bolster his hopes, during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he had a strike rate of 182.63 with a total of 347 runs, including four half-centuries, which should have greatly endeared him to RCB as a potential candidate for the captaincy.

The announcement was made official at a press conference held at Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, where RCB Director of Cricket Mo Bobat and head coach Andy Flower were present. The event was significant because it not only confirmed his new captaincy role, but it also set the mood for the new season with an eye on continuity yet youthfulness.

Virat Kohli, former captain of RCB, had everything to do with this shift. Kohli’s leadership, both on and off the field, was reflected in how he endorsed Patidar when he said, “Me and my other team members will be right behind you, Rajat.” By appointing Patidar as captain and allowing Kohli to focus on his batting, this is a nod towards a strategic change to developing a legacy of the future, similar to what other IPL franchises have done in appointing captains.

Of course, the decision to put in Patidar met with thorough discussions. With Kohli already leading the team for nine seasons and having a record of leading in 143 IPL matches, there was speculation about him returning. Nevertheless, appointing Patidar shows that the franchise is thinking forward and planning longevity rather than instant results, a fact the franchise should be credited with.

Patidar’s remarkable captaincy style of observing his players and anticipating the flow of the match, as he mentioned in an interview, fits in with modern analytical cricket. His mentor and coach, Chandrakant Pandit, has been instrumental in shaping his one-of-a-kind thought process for leading from the front on the field.

The appointment brings excitement mixed with determination for all fans and stakeholders of RCB. Patidar’s rise from being released after the first season to captaining the side stands as an insider view on the fickleness of careers in cricket but also the faith that RCB has in their homegrown talent. Patidar will need to balance seasoned players and newer acquisitions, like Liam Livingstone, Phil Salt, and Josh Hazlewood, who will all bring a different element to the equation.

All eyes are on Patidar now that IPL 2025 is nearing, with the challenge of captaining an equally passionate fan base. The calm attitude and ability to tackle challenges under pressure will be the qualities RCB are expecting from Patidar in their long quest to win an IPL trophy. With the captaincy in new hands, RCB is not just looking to rebuild but redefine their strategy on the field.
