RCB Women vs GG Women Match Highlights
On February 27, 2025, at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Gujarat Giants Women defeated Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women by six wickets in match number 12 of the Women’s Premier League. The match started at 7:30 PM local time and showcased an exhilarating battle of bat vs ball, with Gujarat Giants chasing a small total of 126 in 16.3 overs.
Royal Challengers Bengaluru Women lost the toss and batted first but began shakily. The innings, which got off the ground by the first over after the instant fall of Danielle Wyatt-Hodge for merely 4 runs due to an lbw by Deandra Dottin, all of a sudden saw Captain Smriti Mandhana depart on the 10-run mark, being caught off Tanuja Kanwar’s bosom. There was a duck for Ellyse Perry, and Bengaluru suddenly was in a holler at 25 for three after 5 overs.
Strangely enough, Raghvi Bist and Kanika Ahuja for a short period made an attempt at rebuilding with a partnership of 48 between the two of them for 22 and 33 runs, respectively; and, rapidly, both were following one another off the veil thin scythe. Richa Ghosh could give only 9 runs which didn’t help Bengaluru in their last thrust; nevertheless, Georgia Wareham had a not-out 20, and Kim Garth scored 14 runs pushing total runs for Bengaluru to 125 for seven in 20 overs.
With 2 wickets each for solid bowling duties were Tanuja Kanwar and Deandra Dottin from Gujarat. Chasing 126 to win, the Gujarat Giants Women started off with a strong start by Beth Mooney and Dayalan Hemalatha, putting on 25 runs for the first wicket. Renuka Singh struck twice, first sending Hemalatha packing for 11 before taking out Mooney for 17 to give a shiny ray of hope to Bengaluru.
Harleen Deol made only a cautious 5 off 10 balls before a spectacular effort by Georgia Wareham, but it was captain Ashleigh Gardner whose hammer-like approach swung the game strongly in favor of Gujarat. Gardner made an explosive contribution of 58 on just 31 balls, 3 fours and 3 sixes, absolutely destroying Bengaluru’s bowling. Together with some spirited batting from Phoebe Litchfield, who finished with an unbeaten 30, the Giants raced to a 21-ball win. Deandra Dottin remained not out on a duck and watched Litchfield finish the chase. Besides this, a couple of wickets to Wareham, added with the lack of penetration from Bengaluru’s bowlers to defend a total, hurt the chase quite seriously.
The powerplay has proved significant for both sides. While in their first 6 overs, Bengaluru could score just 26 runs at the cost of 3 wickets, Gujarat managed to score 30 runs losing just one wicket. Gujarat bowlers Dottin (3 for 31) and Kanwar (2 for 16) tried to tame the Bengaluru batters, whereas Gardner’s blitzkrieg overshadowed the Bengaluru efforts. While there was a sense of spine in the middle-order for the home side, they lost a lot by virtue of their ineptitude to convert the starts and not having the punch to make an impact during the death overs.
Winning this match highlighted the depth and composure of Gujarat Giants, with Gardner leading from the front. Bengaluru will be left to rue their early collapse and inability to set a challenging total despite showing some resistance on the field. While both teams will build upon their strengths as the Women’s Premier League 2025 proceeds, for one night, Gujarat Giants Women were the deserving victors, celebrating a clinical all-round performance.
