Sunrisers Eastern Cape vs Joburg Super Kings Match Report

On January 24, 2025, Sunrisers Eastern Cape secured a thrilling 14-run victory over Joburg Super Kings in the 19th match of the SA20 at St George’s Park, Gqeberha. The match which commenced at 05:30 PM local time was one in which every phase had its twists and turns, albeit in a low-scoring contest; eventually, Sunrisers stood tall.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape batted first and got to a total of 165 for 4 in 20 overs. Zak Crawley started with one in the boundary but eventually fell LBW to Hardus Viljoen in the second over; as Sunrisers were in a spot of trouble right away, 9 for 1.

After Crawley was dismissed, the middle order did well to keep the score board ticking. Ben Bedingham contributed 37 off 40 balls before being dismissed by Lutho Sipamla. The team had managed to go from 51 for 2 when Tom Abell (23) and skip Aiden Markram (43) built a steady partnership. Abell fell to Evan Jones, Markram was also dismissed by Jones. The Sunrisers were in need for a late flourish after going to 122 for 4, courtesy wicketkeeper-batter Tristan Stubbs not out 35 off 21 balls. Marco Jansen had a cameo toward the end, scoring 11 not out; Sunrisers posted an above-par total of 165 for 4.

The top order of Joburg Super Kings set up in style an unmanageable chase, from where discipline in the bowling of Sunrisers was again evident in stifling their attempt. Devon Conway, looking perhaps the more dangerous for Joburg, took 43 off 50 balls before falling to Liam Dawson, caught by Zak Crawley. The next-one-down was Joburg’s captain, Faf du Plessis, who made a mere 27 as he was caught by Simon Harmer off the bowling of Marco Jansen. Leus du Plooy and Jonny Bairstow did not stay long, du Plooy gone for 19 and Bairstow only 14 before being made out by Aiden Markram.

At 84/4, Joburg was still hoping on a late revival, which, however, didn’t take place. Crawford took Ferreira for 12 off Richard Gleeson, with wickets continuing to tumble. Wihan Lubbe lingered with 17 not out; it proved insufficient to help Joburg Super Kings to cross the finish line. They were eventually bowled out for 151 with their seamers Marco Jansen and Ottneil Baartman sharing two wickets. Baartman was particularly impressive in the middle overs, dismissing Hardus Viljoen and Maheesh Theekshana at the end of the innings, taking figures of 2/30.

Richard Gleeson also contributed to the bowling cause, with 2/37, having taken an important wicket of Ferreira and that of Evan Jones. Liam Dawson and Aiden Markram made crucial strikes at intervals to contain Joburg in their chase. Sunrisers Eastern Cape’s forces were very disciplined as a team effort to defend the total.

This win saw Sunrisers Eastern Cape further cement their campaign in the SA20 as they successfully defended a total of 165, clinching victory over the Joburg Super Kings by 14 runs. Sunrisers put up an all-around performance where they won a just victory with some key contributions both with the bat and with the ball.
